Be Like Jesus
Philippians 2:1 - 11
1. If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
2. then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.
3. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
4. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
5. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6. Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7. but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on across!
9. Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
10. that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
In this passage Paul says that we should be more like Jesus. Jesus made himself nothing and lived on earth as a true servant of God. Like Jesus, we should be more humble and think of others before ourselves. As simple as that may seem, in today’s society we commend people’s strengths more than weaknesses, making us selfish and wanting to become better than others. There is nothing wrong with having pride, but not the type where you act like you are superior to others. As Christians if our purpose is to bring the joy of Christ to others, as Won said in the previous post, we should be like Jesus, and show people the love of Jesus through our own humility. Bringing ourselves down to nothing and serving others as servants is probably one of the hardest things for most people to do because we have to give up our own pride, but that is how Jesus served others. As Christians, we are servants of God and should try to live our life with a more humble heart. We might lose our own pride, but in the end we will be more satisfied from serving others because we will experience God’s love by loving others.

To Live or To Die?
Today's QT: Phil. 1:19-30
19. for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.
20. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
21. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
22. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!
23. I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
24. but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
25. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
26. so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.
27. Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel
28. without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved--and that by God.
29. For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him,
30. since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
To live is Christ. Although that sounds like a good thing, if you think about it, it's actually a really hard thing. Almost everything we are called to do as Christians, and for Christ, goes against our natural selves. It requires sacrificing our time, our pride, our money. PT (among other pastors, theologians, etc.) has talked about why we, as Christians, don't just go to heaven after being "saved". If being a Christian was just about being with Jesus in heaven then sure, might as well just die now (Hopefully we all have the confidence in our salvation for this extreme case). Paul, who would have the most confidence of any believer, struggles with this question. And as the reflection part of today's QT indicates, for Paul, who endured physical hardship and suffering most of his life, death would have been better: no more traveling to hostile foreign lands, no more prison, no more whippings and torture. He would have been able to enjoy an obviously awesome existence in heaven. However, Paul seems to almost know that he would live out a long-ish life. He would not endure/enjoy the fate of the young martyr. He knows his duty as a Christian is to "continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me." Our duties as Christians here on earth, our purpose here on earth, is to bring the joy of Christ to others. Even if it means struggle and hardship, so that on the day each of us are called "home", individually or collectively, we bring as many of our friends as possible. I hope we're up for the challenge...

1 John 4:1-6
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.
4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. 6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
-New King James Version
So, first off, I'm apologizing because I'm going into a tangent and doing a passage from my series of QTs. I've been reading 1 John as my daily QTs and it's been helping me restructure and revamping my lifestyle; not drastically but in subtle ways. Anyway, onto the meaty stuff!!
A little background to begin, though. During the time that this was written, there were a lot of false teaching. Other than the Word, people believed all sorts of false and weird stuff; all those odd -isms (I would give examples, but I don't have my juicy Bible with me at the moment). So, in turn, these confused people were being pulled in by false prophets and teachings and straying from the actual Truth, which is the Word of God; they didn't know what to believe in or even who to believe in. So, God sent our boy John to deliver the Word and reel 'em back in. That's the general gist of things.
Whoever is in God, loves God and whoever isn't in God, doesn't love God; whoever loves the world, does not love God; etc. This is actually the message that seems to shout-out throughout this entire book.
We all are individual "spirits" in this world. Some provide true teaching and some provide false teaching. Since we know the true Spirit, we can distinguish from what's false and what's true. John continues to encourage those who are in that sort of weakened state.
Key verse for me:
4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
I'm really moved by this verse alone. I realize over and over and over (and over again) that without God, my life is merely nothing; I'm just an empty vessel. And I come to realize that the "greatness" of the world isn't all that great; the money, the looks, the material possessions... Sure, it's great for the moment, but then that fades. Then what? We have media (a spirit) telling us that looks and money will get you places.
If you break it down, John states that since we are of God we have already overcome the world. He didn't say we will overcome it. He says it's been done!! Bring Jesus in your life and you're already set! That's how awesome our God is. That's the greatness of our God! God, through Jesus, has already won the war for us. It's an inevitable victory, but, hence, Satan still fights to drag the world down with him. I see it like a kamikaze type of moment. Satan knows he lost, but he wants to take out as many souls and spirits as possible, and that's where we come in.
I encourage everybody to do their part and really reach out to those in need, those who are lost, those who don't know our Lord. Let's sharpen each other as "iron sharpens iron." Even the simplest of things matter. The Word is an indestructable piece of weaponry; Love it and Live it. God Bless!
-Matthew Lee
PS: Sorry this is coming out so late, and if it sounds all jumbled up, my bad too. Hope you all had an awesome End of Week.

Psalm 71:12-24
12 Be not far from me, O God;
come quickly, O my God, to help me.
13 May my accusers perish in shame;
may those who want to harm me
be covered with scorn and disgrace.
14 But as for me, I will always have hope;
I will praise you more and more.
15 My mouth will tell of your righteousness,
of your salvation all day long,
though I know not its measure.
16 I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, O Sovereign LORD;
I will proclaim your righteousness, yours alone.
17 Since my youth, O God, you have taught me,
and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.
18 Even when I am old and gray,
do not forsake me, O God,
till I declare your power to the next generation,
your might to all who are to come.
19 Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God,
you who have done great things.
Who, O God, is like you?
20 Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter,
you will restore my life again;
from the depths of the earth
you will again bring me up.
21 You will increase my honor
and comfort me once again.
22 I will praise you with the harp
for your faithfulness, O my God;
I will sing praise to you with the lyre,
O Holy One of Israel.
23 My lips will shout for joy
when I sing praise to you—
I, whom you have redeemed.
24 My tongue will tell of your righteous acts
all day long,
for those who wanted to harm me
have been put to shame and confusion.
When I was reading this passage, I tried to imagine what David was going through when he wrote all of these Psalms. There is a little bit of desperation and fear, but the hope and belief that God will sustain and eventually restore David never waivers. And these people were literally out to kill David, and yet he was 100% confident that they would not kill him and, moreover, that God would punish those that are after him and restore David to his rightful position.
So, in our darkest times when we think that no one is there and that there is no hope, we should be like David and remember God's salvation and the hope that he brings to us. When we think that there is nothing that can be done, we need to turn to God and pray for a way out and have faith and know that God will rescue us and not leave us in darkness.

Rediscovering Spiritual Passion
PSALM 71:1-11
1 In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame.
2 Rescue me and deliver me in your righteousness;
turn your ear to me and save me.
3 Be my rock of refuge,
to which I can always go;
give the command to save me,
for you are my rock and my fortress.
4 Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from the grasp of evil and cruel men.
5 For you have been my hope, O Sovereign LORD,
my confidence since my youth.
6 From birth I have relied on you;
you brought me forth from my mother's womb.
I will ever praise you.
7 I have become like a portent to many,
but you are my strong refuge.
8 My mouth is filled with your praise,
declaring your splendor all day long.
9 Do not cast me away when I am old;
do not forsake me when my strength is gone.
10 For my enemies speak against me;
those who wait to kill me conspire together.
11 They say, "God has forsaken him;
pursue him and seize him,
for no one will rescue him."
When that guy (sorry, his name escapes me right now) came a few weeks ago to give his testimony about doing missions work in China, it really challenged me to hear that there are people in China who crave the Word of God but can't get their hands on a Bible. That people risk going to jail just to worship Him or to publically share their faith. And here I am with all these freedoms that I don't take advantage of.
Today's passage got me thinking about how I've lost some of the fire and passion that I had for God when I was younger and I think I need to get back to a point where I'm depending on God like the way a baby or an old man depends on others.

Tomorrow's QT
Even though Won tagged Chris to do tomorrow's QT, I had some free time today so I decided to do my reflection of tomorrow's QT verses a day ahead of time.
The verses are Psalms 70:1-5:
I really relate to David. His cry for help and urgency is something that we all relate too. David really shows the human side of prayer in these verses. I think what separates me and David in this psalm is that he still praises God even when asking for help and urgency. This is something that I really need to work on. I understand it's normal to ask for help and have a sense of urgency to have my prayer answered, but what I forget to do is still praise God while I am doing it. I get so caught up in the prayer request that I forget everything God has done for me. God is great..
The verses are Psalms 70:1-5:
1 For the choir director: A psalm of David, to bring us to the L
2 May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace.
3 Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, "Aha! We've got him now!"
4 But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, "God is great!"
5 But I am poor and needy; please hurry to my aid, O God. You are my helper and my savior; O LORD, do not delay!
I like this version that I found online because it was more easier to understand. Then I went online and found the definition of "psalm" because I did not know what it literally meant. This is where I found out it meant "a sacred song or poem used in worship." Now this verse made a lot more sense to me.I really relate to David. Yay for Mondays! Let's get this party started...
Today's QT: Psalms 69:29-36
Key verse: I will praise God's name in song and glorify Him with thanksgiving. (v. 30)
I like how today's passage begins when the psalmist writes, "I am in pain and distress; may your salvation, O God, protect me. I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving." The key thing to remember is that regardless of our situation, we should be always relying on God, having faith that He will deliver us from whatever situation that we are in. That is how we praise Him and please Him, by turning to Him regardless of circumstance. I am reminded more and more, and something that Christians and non-Christians have a hard time understanding, as believers we are not immune to the pains and trials of this world. We are in an inherently flawed life where hardships are guaranteed. And oftentimes we curse God, blaming Him for putting us in this situation or for not saving us. But He is there to
save us. He HAS saved us. But we fail to recognize and remember He is our savior. I pray that I will open my eyes and see Him for who He is and thank Him and praise Him constantly...

For the rest of the week, we can try a couple different things. We can either "tag" the next person or we can create a lineup of who's going. I kinda like the tag thing, but it's up to you guys. For the people who don't have the book, I will post the verses for each day this week, but I will also make copies for you guys so that I can give them to you tomorrow at cell. Also, I encourage everyone to comment. It doesn't just have to be on the QT, but whatever is on your mind.
CHRIS: "tag", you're up for tomorrow's QT.

Tuesday: Psalms 70:1-5
Wednesday: Psalms 71:1-11
Thursday: Psalms 71:12-24
Friday: Psalms 72:1-11
Saturday: Psalms 72:12-20

TGIF =)
Today's QT passage is from Psalm 68:28-35.
Key verse:
28 Summon your power, O God; show us your strength, O God, as you have done before.
My prayer request for this week was for the mission trip. Despite whatever stumbling blocks there may be (or what I can forsee), I need to put my faith in Him and know that He will make everything work out in the end. Reading today's QT reminded me that He has an eternal plan for me and all of us. I know God will use our China mission team to make an impact on many lives.
Father God, I humbly submit to you. Thank you for opening my heart and allowing me to hear your voice. I am constantly reminded each day that you have blessed me. You are an awesome God so I will trust you to lead me on the right path. Thank you. Amen!

let's get it started
**EDIT**
this is the actual FIRST QT Blog, courtesy of Roumee:
How about random for now....i'll start.Today's(Thursday) QT is from Psalm 68:19-27"Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Selah"
The first verse really touched me today because I felt that God saved me. As I shared with my cell group yesterday, I was really stressed out at work. I had toinstall a new program on the computer to finish a project by Friday. Yesterday I spent the whole day trying to install the program but it didn't work. I didn't want to go to work today because I knew it was going to be impossible to meet the deadline. But I actually went in earlier than usual and finally got the program to work within an hour. I was still really stressed about finishing the project but a few hours later my boss got a call saying that the deposition date had been postponed, so my deadline was postponed as well. :) God answered my prayers today when I felt hopeless. I guess during our toughest times we need to call on Him and praise Him because He will lift our burdens! Thank you for praying for me.

What this is
This is an idea that came from Jean and Chris to reduce the amount of email that clutter's everyone's email. With this blog, we can post about our thoughts on the daily QT and everyone can comment and discuss without sending 10 emails/day.
Everyone is invited to contribute.
