Be Like Jesus

Philippians 2:1 - 11

1. If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
2. then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.
3. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
4. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
5. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6. Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7. but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on across!
9. Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
10. that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

In this passage Paul says that we should be more like Jesus. Jesus made himself nothing and lived on earth as a true servant of God. Like Jesus, we should be more humble and think of others before ourselves. As simple as that may seem, in today’s society we commend people’s strengths more than weaknesses, making us selfish and wanting to become better than others. There is nothing wrong with having pride, but not the type where you act like you are superior to others. As Christians if our purpose is to bring the joy of Christ to others, as Won said in the previous post, we should be like Jesus, and show people the love of Jesus through our own humility. Bringing ourselves down to nothing and serving others as servants is probably one of the hardest things for most people to do because we have to give up our own pride, but that is how Jesus served others. As Christians, we are servants of God and should try to live our life with a more humble heart. We might lose our own pride, but in the end we will be more satisfied from serving others because we will experience God’s love by loving others.

I agree it's hard to try to be like Jesus, and have the same attitude as him. But being normal humans, it is hard to be like this perfect man. He never sins, but still hung around sinners. He never gets off focus. Some people can hear the voice of God and get a totally different message then someone else. Sometimes I wish he would just be more direct and just tell us what to do. But I guess it's the spiritual journey that makes the treasure in the end much more worth it.

The verse that stuck out to me was verse 3. "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves."

This is probably the hardest for me to do. Of course its easy for me to acknowledge someone who is clearly better than me. The hard part is doing the same for the ones that I don't like so much. As PT always says that whenever you see someone that is unappealing or smelly for example, you tend to turn away and think that you're better. But in God's eyes, we are just like those people but he still takes us in as his own children. It is so difficult to love someone that you dislike, especially an enemy. But if God could love a sinner like me it gives me motivation to try and be like Jesus.
